77 Records #3- Burnt Offerings "Songs About Sex" Cassette
The first time I heard Burnt Offerings I was in my bedroom — probably listening to records — and I heard some dark, rough, synthetic music coming from the living room stereo (yes we have multiple stereos). Mike Bussler (one half of Burnt Offerings) was introducing Claire Graves (the other half) to the first synth and drum machine parts he had done in preparation for their new band. I was amazed. I am a big fan of Wax Trax, Industrial Records and all kinds of dark, synthy weirdos and this was the real deal. And it was happening in Grand Rapids. I offered to put out a tape with them on the spot.
3 or 4 months later we have “Songs About Sex,” a 10 song demo of sorts. Unlike most demos, the tape was professionally duplicated and printed (yes the tapes have info printed RIGHT ON THEM!) at National Audio in Missouri. Each tape also has the lyric sheet wrapped around it sealed with a wax seal. Each one is sealed by hand using a brass die imprinted with the Burnt Offerings logo.
If you are a fan of Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV, KMFDM or dark heavy music in general you will be into this. If you aren’t into those kinds of music, what makes you so normal?
