SKELETON PARTY

It was probably about 2005 or so when I heard the first inklings of what would become Skeleton Party.  A bunch of high school students were playing dirty sounding garage/blues influenced originals in the tiny Four Friends Coffeehouse (R.I.P.).  They called themselves the Anti-Federalists and there was something about them I knew was different.  They were into music, not just being in a band.  They were excited and creative and willing to throw themselves into what they played.  That band led into Party Favorites which led to Skeleton Party and the rest is history.  That intensity has only grown over time and their constant music-listening has deepened their sound and intensified their impact.

Skeleton Party has self-released a number of cassettes but nothing has showed up on vinyl until now.  The seven tracks on this split are fast, tight and wild.  There are no discernable hallmarks of an era they are pining for because there is none.  They don’t sound like the 60’s or 80’s; they are making music in the present for the present.  There is no longing for better days before they were even born.

These songs are already being eclipsed by their new material which testifies to their constant evolution. It’s an exciting time to be listening to Skeleton Party.

RELIGIOUS SS DISORDER

Ryan and Claire from Religious SS Disorder introduced me to the world of hardcore punk in Grand Rapids and Ryan’s label — Punks Before Profits — inspired me to start 77 Records.  RSSD are a lot like Skeleton Party; while they have learned from past artists and genres they are not in love with the past.  Claire, Ryan, Matt, Mike and Corbin made music that they believed in and played with conviction and boundless energy.   The band may have ended in April, 2010 but their legacy on vinyl and in the memories of hardcore fans around the country will not fade quickly.

This split 12″ is released jointly with the fantastic Punks Before Profits label.  Please check out their releases as well.
